Overview

  • Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan told the UN Security Council there are reasonable grounds to believe that war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed and continue unabated in Darfur.
  • ICC investigators have amassed more than 7,000 items of documentary, testimonial and digital evidence, including interviews with survivors in refugee camps across neighboring Chad.
  • The Rapid Support Forces now control most of Darfur and have laid siege to El Fasher while attacking Zamzam and other displacement camps, effectively cutting off humanitarian access.
  • Humanitarian conditions have reached an intolerable state as hospitals and aid convoys come under direct attack and civilians are deprived of water and food.
  • Survivors report systematic rape and sexual violence as weapons of war, along with widespread abductions for ransom or forced recruitment into armed groups.
