ICC Convicts Janjaweed Commander Ali Kushayb on 27 Counts for Darfur Atrocities

The ruling delivers the court’s first Darfur conviction with sentencing to follow.

Overview

  • Presiding Judge Joanna Korner announced 27 guilty verdicts for crimes including murder, rape, torture and persecution committed in 2003–2004.
  • Judges found Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman was a senior Janjaweed commander who ordered and personally participated in beatings and mass executions, rejecting his claim he was not Ali Kushayb.
  • The court heard testimony from 56 prosecution witnesses and 17 for the defense, and it declined to rule on four charges because they were covered by other convictions.
  • A separate sentencing hearing will be scheduled, and the maximum possible penalty is life imprisonment.
  • The decision lands as new atrocities and famine risks are reported in Sudan’s war between the army and the RSF, and ICC prosecutors have signaled possible further warrants.
