Overview

  • The ICC’s updated concussion substitution rules take effect in Test cricket on June 17 with the Sri LankaBangladesh match in Galle and in white-ball internationals from July 2 in ODIs and July 10 in T20Is.
  • Teams must name five designated concussion replacements—one wicketkeeper, batter, seam bowler, spinner and all-rounder—before each match, with the match referee authorised to sanction exceptional changes if a substitute is also concussed.
  • ODI games will use two new balls for overs 1–34, after which the fielding side selects one ball for overs 35–50 to maintain the potential for reverse swing.
  • Matches cut to 25 overs or fewer will feature a single new ball per innings under the revised playing conditions.
  • The World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa, starting June 11 at Lord’s, will be governed by the existing playing conditions.
