ICC Concludes Landmark War Crimes Trial of Sudanese Militia Leader
Ali Kushayb faces 31 charges for atrocities during Darfur conflict, with final arguments underway at The Hague.
- Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb, is accused of leading Sudan's Janjaweed militia in a campaign of murder, rape, and torture in Darfur between 2003 and 2004.
- Prosecutors allege that Abd-Al-Rahman played a key role in atrocities that killed 300,000 people and displaced over 2.5 million, according to UN figures.
- The trial, the first ICC case stemming from a UN Security Council referral, included testimony from 56 prosecution witnesses detailing mass killings, sexual violence, and destruction of villages.
- Abd-Al-Rahman, who denies the charges and claims he was a pharmacist caught up in the conflict, surrendered to the ICC in 2020 after fleeing Sudan.
- The ICC is also investigating new war crimes in Sudan's ongoing conflict, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions since fighting erupted between the RSF and the Sudanese army.
