Overview

• BC Parks Porteau Cove licence plates are the first to feature the new character patterns, which began appearing this month
• Standard passenger plates will transition to the updated configurations as early as August 2025
• The revisions introduce the previously unused letters U, Y and Z while continuing to exclude I, O and Q to prevent misidentification
• Plate design, reflectivity and materials remain unchanged and law enforcement scanners will function without modification
• ICBC will phase the new formats across 16 of its roughly 40 plate types as inventories deplete to secure sufficient combinations for the next two decades
