IBM Integrates and Cools First Cryogenic Modules Toward Starling

Sustained ultra-low temperatures enable multiple quantum chips to share fragile quantum states, a step IBM says is needed for fault-tolerant systems.

  • IBM, which announced the work Wednesday, said it has integrated and cooled the first two cryogenic modules at an upstate New York facility and that initial tests reached about 4 kelvin in under five days before falling below 15 millikelvin.
  • Each modular unit stands over eight feet tall and wide and contains vacuum chambers and expanded wiring to let many quantum processors operate together inside a single ultra-cold environment.
  • IBM described Starling as a roughly 200-qubit machine able to run about 100 billion operations and said these modules are a stepping stone on a plan that targets a fault-tolerant system before 2030 and further scaling toward Blue Jay in the early 2030s.
  • The announcement pushed IBM shares higher by roughly 1.7–1.9 percent, while the company reported Q2 earnings in line with estimates, a $1.69 quarterly dividend, and analysts trimmed price targets but kept a Moderate Buy consensus with an average target near $265.
