IBGE Workers Strike in Rio and Bahia Over Management Changes
The union warns management moves could undermine the institute’s technical independence by exposing microdata through a contested Serpro cloud deal.
Overview
- The national IBGE union ASSIBGE says strikes are active at the institute’s Rio headquarters, the Rio superintendency and in Bahia following weeks of disputes with president Márcio Pochmann.
- The union lists concrete grievances that include creation of a private‑law IBGE foundation without prior legislative approval, a reported R$80 million contract with Serpro for cloud services, last‑minute changes to the staff Programa de Gestão and sudden alterations to field indemnity rules.
- The union estimates about 40% of the Bahia workforce joined the walkout and reports Mato Grosso, Pará, Sergipe, Piauí, Mato Grosso do Sul, Espírito Santo, Paraná and other Rio units are in a state of mobilization.
- IBGE says operations and scheduled surveys are continuing and that management seeks institutional modernization while it maintains dialogue with staff, but the union warns data confidentiality and the institute’s autonomy are at risk.
- The dispute has moved into legal and oversight channels with the union filing a mandado de segurança and taking complaints to the TCU and the federal management ministry while planning public protests and assemblies this week.
