IBGE Publishes Brazil’s First Official Surname Ranking From 2022 Census

The new Nomes do Brasil site gives the public a searchable view of name counts across Brazil.

Overview

  • Silva leads with 34,030,104 people (16.76%), followed by Santos with 21,367,475 (10.52%) and Oliveira with 11,708,947 (5.77%).
  • The release draws on the 2022 Census, which recorded names and surnames separately for 203 million residents in 90.7 million households and standardized variants and diacritics.
  • IBGE posted a top-30 ranking and an infographic covering roughly 4,000 surnames, with a lookup that shows frequencies by decade, state and municipality.
  • The Nomes do Brasil portal applies minimum-frequency thresholds of 20 nationwide and 10 by municipality and counts surnames regardless of their position in the full name.
  • Among given names, Maria appears 12,284,478 times, Jose 5,164,752, and Ana 3,948,650 in the 2022 data.
