IBGE Ousts Veteran Communications Managers, Elevates Probationary Hires

Overview

• An intranet notice published Nov. 17–18 by IBGE under president Marcio Pochmann removed several long-serving managers in the communications area and named new leaders.
• Four of the five new appointees joined the institute in July 2025 and remain on probation, including Marcos Filipe da Silva Sousa, Sheila Machado de Assis Ferreira, Lorenzo Mello and Adriano Marques de Souza.
• A staff note of repudiation, now with more than 200 endorsements, calls the decision authoritarian and alleges retaliation against prior internal denunciations.
• Employees warn the reshuffle risks the integrity and impartiality of more than 200 annual releases that include unemployment, inflation, GDP and poverty indicators.
• The shake-up follows months of internal conflict, including an Oct. 21 protest over a proposed new statute, and IBGE has not responded to press requests for comment.
