IBGE Data Shows Brazil’s Gender Pay Gap Narrowed to 15.8% in 2023

The new Cempre release measures aggregate pay across formal organizations rather than like-for-like roles.

Overview

  • Across roughly 10 million formal entities, total wages reached R$2.6 trillion in 2023, with an average monthly pay of R$3,745.45 for all workers.
  • On average, men earned R$3,993.26 per month and women R$3,449.00, meaning women received 86.4% of men’s pay.
  • The average gap fell from 17.0% in 2022 to 15.8% in 2023, indicating a modest year-over-year narrowing.
  • Men accounted for 54.5% of salaried employees and received 58.1% of payroll, while women represented 45.5% and received 41.9%.
  • Structural differences remain pronounced: workers with higher education earned R$7,489.16 on average—about triple those without (R$2,587.52)—and employment is gender-skewed by sector, with men concentrated in construction, industry and transport, and women in public administration, health and education.
