Iberdrola Plans for Almaraz Nuclear Shutdown on Original 2027–28 Schedule

The owners have placed the plant in closure mode to prepare filings requested by the nuclear regulator.

Overview

  • Iberdrola’s 2025–2028 strategy assumes Almaraz’s two reactors will close as scheduled in 2027 and 2028, with Chairman Ignacio Sánchez Galán saying he believes the plant will shut down.
  • The consortium will submit the documentation the Nuclear Safety Council requires to progress decommissioning, with initial filings expected starting in October and a formal information deadline set before November.
  • Approval of more than €20 million in investments to keep Almaraz ready for a possible delay to 2030 remains frozen pending a high‑level meeting with the government.
  • The owners continue to seek two‑ to three‑year extensions conditioned on tax and fee changes, while the government insists any proposal must ensure safety, supply security and no added costs for consumers.
  • Iberdrola estimates a 550 MW hit to its capacity from the closure and says it will cover the loss with new renewables, as owners also warn that Enresa lacks a full decommissioning plan and timely waste storage, risking Garoña‑style delays.
