Overview

• Mori Keiko, 75, was arrested on Sept. 25 on suspicion of abandoning a corpse after she went to Ushiku Police on Sept. 23 and said her daughter’s body was in a freezer at her home in Ami Town.
• Officers found the remains in an upper-opening chest freezer in the kitchen; the body was folded and covered with a blanket, with multiple deodorants and branches placed inside.
• The suspect told investigators she put the body in the freezer about 20 years ago and said she bought the unit because a smell had filled the house.
• Reports identify the daughter as Makiko, born in 1975, who was believed to be about 30 at the time and living separately from her mother.
• Relatives accompanied the suspect to the station after a family gathering following her husband's death this month, and police are continuing to examine the timing and circumstances as the autopsy proceeds.
