Ibama Seeks Clarifications, Sets Oct. 16 Meeting as Petrobras Faces Oct. 21 Rig Deadline

Clarifications to emergency and wildlife-response plans remain the last hurdle after last month's drill simulation cleared the prior stage.

Overview

  • In an official notice on Oct. 14, the regulator said technical reviews found pending uncertainties in the emergency and fauna-response documentation for the Foz do Amazonas project.
  • The agency proposed a meeting for Thursday, Oct. 16, to discuss the questions and move toward the final steps of the license.
  • Petrobras said it will answer all inquiries and is holding technical sessions this week, expressing confidence that an operating license can be issued soon.
  • Company leadership warned that drilling must start by Oct. 21 under the rig contract or the unit could be reassigned, which could force parts of the licensing to restart if a different rig is used.
  • The pre-operational emergency simulation was approved on Sept. 24 with follow-up requests, including an explanation for vessel positioning that differed from prior studies, and the contracted rig’s daily cost is about R$ 4.2 million.
