IAF Chief Inaugurates Nyoma Airbase in Ladakh With C-130J Landing

The high-altitude station strengthens India’s rapid air mobility near the China frontier.

Overview

  • Air Chief Marshal A P Singh marked the operationalisation on November 12 by landing a C-130J at the Mudh-Nyoma air force station.
  • The paved runway spans roughly 2.7–3 km at 13,700 feet elevation and about 23–30 km from the LAC, supporting fighters, transports and helicopters with launch, recovery and minor maintenance.
  • The Border Roads Organisation delivered the Rs 214–218 crore upgrade after a September 2023 foundation, adding hangars, an ATC building and hard standings, with officials noting a women-led BRO team.
  • Nyoma is now the fourth Indian Air Force base in Ladakh after Leh, Kargil and Thoise, providing a forward hub near Pangong Tso for faster troop and equipment movement.
  • Defence planners are also reviving the Chushul ALG and improving Daulat Beg Oldie to broaden high-altitude air operations along the sector.
