IAF Chief Inaugurates High-Altitude Nyoma Airbase Near LAC With C-130J Landing

The new paved runway and sustainment facilities expand India’s capacity for rapid air mobility and logistics in eastern Ladakh near the China frontier.

Overview

  • Air Chief Marshal A P Singh landed a C-130J at Mudh‑Nyoma on November 12 to formally operationalise the airbase in eastern Ladakh.
  • The base features a 2.7 km paved runway, ATC, hangars and hardstanding, enabling operations by fighter jets, transport aircraft and helicopters with on-site sustainment.
  • Situated at roughly 13,700 feet and close to the Line of Actual Control, the airfield enhances quick movement of troops, equipment and supplies to forward sectors.
  • The Border Roads Organisation executed the upgrade under a project valued at about Rs 214–230 crore after the foundation was laid in September 2023.
  • Nyoma becomes the fourth operational IAF base in Ladakh after Leh, Kargil and Thoise, reflecting a broader post‑2020 build-out of border air and ground infrastructure.
