IAEA Says Chernobyl’s New Shelter Has Lost Containment After Drone Strike

The UN nuclear watchdog urges urgent restoration following a February drone strike that damaged the shelter’s cladding.

Overview

  • An IAEA mission last week concluded the New Safe Confinement has lost primary safety functions, including containment, after a Feb. 14 drone impact that ignited and scarred its outer cladding.
  • Radiation readings remain stable with no confirmed leaks, and inspectors found no permanent damage to the shelter’s support structures or monitoring systems.
  • Only limited roof patching has been done, and the agency is pressing for comprehensive restoration that includes moisture control, updated corrosion monitoring and a modernized automated monitoring system.
  • Temporary repair works supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are planned in 2026 to help reestablish containment pending a full restoration when conditions permit.
  • Ukraine accuses Russia of the attack and the Kremlin denies responsibility, as continuing strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure fuel concern over nuclear-site safety; the IAEA maintains a permanent team at Chernobyl.
