IAEA Reports Shelling Near Zaporizhzhia as Russian Strikes Batter Ukraine’s Energy Network

Running solely on diesel at the occupied site, Ukraine’s grid enters a precarious stretch marked by fresh strikes that damage generation, complicating repairs.

Overview

  • IAEA monitors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant heard incoming and outgoing fire, with two rounds landing about 1.25 km from the perimeter, as the facility remains off Ukraine’s grid and reliant on diesel since a Sept. 23 line cut.
  • Ukraine’s grid operator reported new outages across Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy and Donetsk, with rolling cuts in Chernihiv as repair crews work under air raid alerts.
  • DTEK said Russian drones seriously damaged a thermal power plant overnight, injuring two workers, and a coal enrichment facility in Donetsk region was destroyed, while strikes also hit energy sites in Chernihiv, Kherson and Dnipropetrovsk.
  • Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk said Russian attacks caused significant damage to gas production capacity and that Ukraine aims to boost natural gas imports by 30 percent after talks with G7 partners.
  • Russia reported a drone hit a cooling tower at its Novovoronezh nuclear plant, and the IAEA said there was no impact on nuclear safety, as Moscow warned Kyiv against actions near the occupied Zaporizhzhia site.
