IAE Partners Reaffirm Consortium, Plot Second-Generation GTF Path

Support for the in-service GTF fleet takes priority over new development.

Overview

  • JAEC, MTU Aero Engines and Pratt & Whitney restated their alliance and said they will evolve the geared turbofan architecture for future single-aisle aircraft.
  • IAE outlined second-generation GTF work on advanced materials, high-performance-computing-enabled aerodynamics, a smaller high-speed core and hybrid-electric integration.
  • Pratt & Whitney’s Shane Eddy said stabilizing and supporting the existing GTF fleet remains the immediate focus for the consortium.
  • MTU CEO Johannes Bussmann said the company is expanding its GTF MRO operations to meet rising overhaul demand and reduce maintenance bottlenecks.
  • IAE cited the V2500’s 300 million flight hours and projected similar real-world experience for the GTF by the mid‑2030s to argue a lower-risk alternative to open‑fan or hydrogen concepts being studied by airframers such as Airbus.
