I-96 Chain-Reaction Crash Near Howell Leaves 22-Year-Old Critically Injured as Probe Continues

Investigators cite speed plus possible distraction as factors under review.

Overview

  • At about 1:48 p.m. on Oct. 8, a westbound semitrailer on I-96 near Pickney Road in Marion Township rear-ended two vehicles, then crashed into a second semitrailer that subsequently struck two more vehicles.
  • A 22-year-old driver hit by the second semitrailer was taken to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing with life-threatening injuries.
  • The first semitrailer’s driver, a 58-year-old man from Wisconsin, was flown by Life Flight to the University of Michigan Hospital with serious injuries.
  • Two additional people were hospitalized with minor injuries, and westbound lanes were closed from shortly after 2 p.m. until about 7:30 p.m.
  • The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from Howell Area Fire, Michigan State Police, Michigan State Motor Carriers and Livingston County EMS, as a separate fatal crash near Mason Road on Oct. 6 underscores safety concerns on this corridor.
