I-696 Wrong-Way Driver Sentenced to 30–50 Years for Second-Degree Murder

Prosecutors are using the case to press for tougher penalties for drivers who flee police.

Overview

  • Stephano Ramon Nabors, 42, received a 30 to 50 year prison term in Macomb County Circuit Court following his conviction in August.
  • A jury found Nabors guilty after a three-day trial on second-degree murder and related counts including operating while intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, driving while license suspended causing death, and fleeing and eluding.
  • Authorities say the May 5, 2023 sequence began when Nabors drove east in I-696’s westbound lanes near Couzens Road and caused another vehicle to roll over.
  • Prosecutors report he nearly struck a Michigan State Police patrol car near Groesbeck Highway, then continued on and crashed head-on near Gratiot Avenue, killing a 62-year-old Harper Woods driver.
  • Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido says the sentence underscores accountability, notes Nabors could have faced life on the top charge, and points to an office policy ending reduced-charge pleas in fleeing cases while urging state lawmakers to strengthen statutes.
