I-5 Reopens After Castaic Gas Pipeline Rupture With No Injuries Reported

Investigators now focus on storm-driven land movement following the sealing of the 34-inch line.

Overview

  • A high-pressure transmission pipeline ruptured about 4:20 p.m. Saturday near Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place beside the southbound I-5 in Castaic.
  • CHP issued a SigAlert and closed both directions of I-5 with detours to SR-126 and SR-138 before reopening the freeway around 8:45–9 p.m.
  • A shelter-in-place affecting roughly 14,900 residents in nearby neighborhoods was lifted around 10 p.m., and no evacuations were ordered.
  • SoCalGas isolated the damaged section and stopped the leak, with hazmat teams conducting atmospheric monitoring and officials reporting no ignition or explosion.
  • Repair planning is underway, a few nonresidential customers experienced service interruptions, and residents may still notice gas odors as remaining gas dissipates.
