I-43 Reopens After Semi Jackknifes Into Oncoming Traffic, Killing One and Injuring Four

Investigators cite icy pavement as a factor in the cross-median crash.

Overview

  • The collision occurred just after 3 p.m. Wednesday near WIS 33 in the Town of Saukville when a southbound semi lost control, jackknifed, and crossed into northbound lanes.
  • Two northbound vehicles—a 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van and a 2018 Ford Fusion—were pinned under the trailer; the Mercedes driver died and the Ford driver sustained life-threatening injuries.
  • A Subaru Forester also struck the semi near the exit gore, and its three occupants suffered severe injuries that are expected to be survivable.
  • Northbound I-43 was closed for about five and a half hours, with all lanes reopening around 8:53 p.m., and a separate southbound jackknife near CTH LL cleared at 6:10 p.m.
  • The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office leads the investigation, reports icy road conditions at the scene, and has not confirmed the semi driver's medical status.
