I-35 Reopens in Southern Minnesota as Blizzard Cleanup Continues

Blowing snow will slow reopening despite improving conditions.

Overview

  • State officials lifted the full closure of I-35 between Albert Lea and the Iowa line after multiple crashes, with crews removing disabled vehicles and cautioning drivers to delay trips.
  • No‑travel advisories persisted across much of southern Minnesota, including long stretches of I-90 and numerous U.S. and state highways where drifting and low visibility continued.
  • Gov. Tim Walz authorized the Minnesota National Guard to support rescues and shelter operations, including an emergency site at the Albert Lea armory.
  • The Minnesota State Patrol logged hundreds of crashes: 366 property-damage crashes and 30 with injuries on Sunday, plus 186 property-damage crashes and 16 with injuries by late Monday morning, with dozens of jackknifed semis reported over both days.
  • Holiday travel faced broader disruption, with hundreds of flight delays and cancellations at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport and snowfall totals of roughly 5–7 inches in the Twin Cities and higher amounts in parts of Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
