I-10 Westbound Cut to Two Lanes Through Mid-2026 as TxDOT Starts White Oak Bayou Elevation Work

The $400 million project lifts the freeway over a flood-prone stretch to reduce recurring closures.

Overview

  • Beginning Oct. 24, westbound I-10 between I-45 and Houston Avenue will be reduced to two lanes to construct new elevated mainlanes, with the restriction lasting until mid-2026.
  • The I-45 southbound direct connector to I-10 westbound will stay fully closed through mid-2026, and the I-10 eastbound direct connector to I-45 northbound will remain closed through mid-2028.
  • TxDOT’s White Oak Bayou Elevation Project, budgeted at roughly $400–$407 million, is designed to raise I-10 above the bayou’s floodplain and lessen future shutdowns.
  • The 14-foot-3-inch Houston Avenue Bridge has been struck 72 times in 2025, with eight incidents severe enough to trigger police investigations.
  • Bridge demolition is planned for early 2027 with reconstruction continuing into 2027–2028, and oversize-load detection systems with flashing warnings and inspections remain in place as interim safeguards.
