Hyundai Unveils Ioniq 9 Seed Ball Drone Station to Reforest Wildfire-Damaged Terrain

It taps drone-based seed ball dispersal powered by the SUV’s off-grid power supply to accelerate reforestation in remote coastal forests.

Overview

  • Hyundai unveiled the Ioniq 9 Seed Ball Drone Station on July 17, transforming its three-row electric SUV into a mobile drone platform.
  • A large integrated drone can disperse clay seed balls filled with native seeds and organic material across steep, wildfire-damaged terrain.
  • The rear cabin has been converted into a command center with swivel seating, dual monitors and a dedicated drone control computer.
  • Developed with Guru E&T and backed by the Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute and Tree Planet, the vehicle is part of Hyundai’s Smart Forest Restoration Program.
  • With off-road capabilities and a vehicle-to-load system for independent power, it is set for its first deployment in Uljin on South Korea’s eastern coast.
