Hyundai Mobis Launches Auto Semicon Korea to Build a Homegrown Auto‑Chip Supply Chain

The initiative sets near‑term mass‑production goals to cut Korea’s reliance on imported components.

Overview

  • At a forum in Pangyo, Hyundai Mobis convened 23 companies and research institutes, including Samsung Electronics, LX Semicon, SK keyfoundry, DB HiTek, GlobalFoundries, Dongwoon Anatech and KERI.
  • The company said it is already mass‑producing 16 in‑house‑designed semiconductor types via external foundries, totaling roughly 20 million units a year.
  • Under the partnership, Hyundai Mobis targets independently designing and manufacturing more than 10 additional automotive chips within two to three years.
  • A joint development with GlobalFoundries and Dongwoon Anatech on next‑generation lamp and power drive semiconductors is near completion, with mass production planned as early as next year.
  • Organizers plan to hold the forum annually and broaden participation to startups, as Korea currently imports about 95 percent of its auto chips and the market is projected to reach about US$138 billion by 2030.
