Overview

  • Construction has started on the Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre at IIT Madras’ Discovery Campus after its design unveiling earlier this month.
  • The 65,000-square-foot hub is backed by a ₹100 crore Hyundai commitment within the total ₹180 crore investment, facilitated by Guidance Tamil Nadu and the state government.
  • It will house experimental and computational laboratories, digital twin simulations, pilot-scale electrolyser and fuel cell test rigs, and containerised evaluation zones.
  • Research teams aim to develop indigenous biomass conversion and electrolyser technologies to reduce hydrogen production costs from around $5 to $2 per kilogram.
  • Stakeholders plan biomass supply chains from municipal waste and a network of hydrogen refuelling stations to support a future Chennai-to-Kanniyakumari fuel-cell vehicle run.
