Hyundai Creates New Operations and Engineering Roles, Appoints Metz and Carriero to Steer 2026 WEC-WRC Push

The moves concentrate leadership to relieve resource strain from an expanded WEC-WRC program.

Overview

  • Sébastien Metz becomes operations director and Massimo Carriero head of engineering in newly created posts, both effective January 1, 2026.
  • The pair will oversee Genesis Magma Racing’s GMR-001 Hypercar effort for the 2026 FIA WEC season as well as Hyundai’s World Rally Championship program.
  • Metz will manage day-to-day operations and longer-term planning across facilities, reporting to Hyundai Motorsport president Cyril Abiteboul.
  • Carriero will lead the engineering group to build in-house capability, working alongside technical director FX Demaison; Andrew Wheatley was recently named WRC sporting director.
  • Hyundai frames the hires as a response to stretched resources and a tough 2025 WRC campaign with one win from 12 rallies, while ruling out an all-new 2027 WRC car and keeping a Rally2 upgrade under consideration.
