Hyenas Maul Camper at South Africa’s Cape Vidal as Park Moves to Capture Animals

Officials warn campers to secure tents and avoid feeding wildlife at the iSimangaliso reserve.

Overview

  • Farmer Nicolas Hohls, 27, was dragged from his tent at Cape Vidal by two hyenas and sustained serious wounds to his head, face, hand and leg.
  • He fought the animals off by forcing a hand into one hyena’s mouth and pressing a thumb into the other’s eye before they fled.
  • With no paramedics nearby, his father drove him about two hours to Netcare Alberlito Hospital, where he underwent emergency cleaning and later reconstructive surgery.
  • Doctors gave him roughly 70 stitches and are monitoring him for infection as he recovers under close supervision.
  • Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife confirmed the attack, cited a recent similar incident at the same campsite, and said it will attempt to capture the hyenas while urging guests to keep tents fully zipped.
