Overview
- A December 25 Gazette finalized boundaries for 300 wards and completed the merger of 27 Urban Local Bodies into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
- The corporation has been reorganized from six zones and 30 circles to 12 zones and 60 circles, making it the country’s largest municipal body by area.
- Six new zones—Malkajgiri, Uppal, Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Golconda and Quthbullapur—join existing zones such as Charminar, Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Secunderabad, Khairatabad and LB Nagar.
- The state created a Special Chief Secretary post for metropolitan and urban development and appointed Jayesh Ranjan to lead the role.
- Zonal offices have been set up at circle locations and commissioners’ phone numbers were shared with media, though the GHMC website had not reflected the new zones by Friday afternoon.
