Hyderabad’s GHMC Becomes India’s Largest Civic Body as 12 Zonal Chiefs Take Charge

Overview

  • The Telangana government issued a Gazette on December 25 confirming boundaries for 300 wards after merging 27 urban local bodies into an expanded GHMC.
  • Newly appointed zonal commissioners assumed charge on December 26, with offices finalising records and equipment to begin full operations from Monday.
  • The municipal area grows from about 650 sq km to roughly 2,000–2,053 sq km, with the population now cited at over 1.34 crore.
  • Administration has been reorganised into 12 zones and 60 circles, with several zones newly created at Uppal, Quthbullapur, Malkajgiri, Shamshabad, Golconda and Rajendranagar.
  • The state created a Special Chief Secretary post for metropolitan affairs and named Jayesh Ranjan, while phone contacts for zonal heads were released even as official website updates were pending.
