Hyderabad Police Roll Out Zonal Cyber Cells to Combat Rising Online Crime

The cells aim to accelerate local responses to the city’s surge in online offences by registering complaints, blocking fraud, coordinating technical investigations

Overview

  • Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand inaugurated Zonal Cyber Cells across all seven city zones on May 29, 2025.
  • The initiative deploys 61 officers, including inspectors, sub-inspectors, head constables, police constables and home guards, to staff the new units.
  • Reporting to their zonal deputy commissioners, the cells will file complaints on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, block fraudulent transactions and facilitate victim refunds.
  • The units will leverage expertise from the Cyber Crimes Police Station, which expanded from 40 to 147 staff members in 2023 to provide technical support.
  • Cybercrime cases in Hyderabad climbed from 351 incidents in 2015 to 3,111 in 2024, including a rise from 1,393 to 2,550 between 2019 and 2020.
