Hyderabad Metro Completes Feasibility Study for Personal Rapid Transit System

The study recommends pursuing a public‑private partnership to pilot automated pod links that connect metro stations to final destinations

Overview

  • Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited has finished a techno‑economic feasibility study on introducing a Personal Rapid Transit System and presented its findings at a stakeholder workshop.
  • The consultant outlined a proposed network, ridership estimates and possible depot sites but flagged alignment limits, depot land needs and capital‑cost and regulatory challenges that must be resolved.
  • Two priority study areas were identified for detailed planning: the Raidurg–Kukatpally corridor including HITEC City and the Financial District, and the Secretariat–Begumpet–Secunderabad West area.
  • The workshop drew government agencies, traffic police, transport bodies, technology firms, real estate developers and academic institutions such as IIT Hyderabad, IIIT Hyderabad and Osmania University to give feedback.
  • HMRL is compiling stakeholder input and exploring a PPP route to take the project forward, but no approvals, contracts, funding or construction timelines have been announced yet.
