Hyderabad Floods Swamp MGBS as Musi Swells After Reservoir Releases

Officials report receding levels, prompting scrutiny of reservoir gate decisions.

Overview

  • Heavy upper-catchment rain led to large discharges from Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, pushing the Musi over its banks and inundating Chaderghat and the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station.
  • Roughly 1,000 residents and bus passengers were evacuated, with drones used to deliver food to people stranded in low-lying areas.
  • By Friday evening, up to about 30,000 cusecs was being released as 12 Osman Sagar gates and 9 Himayat Sagar gates were operated, according to local reporting.
  • MGBS services were suspended during peak Dasara travel, power supply was cut for safety, silt and muck clogged the facility, and buses were diverted to LB Nagar, Uppal, Aramghar and Jubilee Bus Station pending a Sunday assessment.
  • HYDRAA’s A. V. Ranganath said water levels were receding with reduced upstream rainfall, while a political dispute grew after K. T. Rama Rao accused the government over gate operations and the Transport Minister attributed flooding to unexpected heavy rain.
