Overview
- Habibur Masum was convicted of murdering his estranged wife, Kulsuma Akter, by stabbing her at least 25 times as she pushed their seven-month-old son in a pram.
- CCTV footage captured Masum calmly walking away and boarding a bus before he was arrested near Stoke Mandeville Hospital four days later.
- Mr Justice Cotter described Masum as “violent, self-centred, jealous, controlling and coercive” and condemned the killing as “brutal and merciless” when imposing sentence.
- Prosecutors heard Masum premeditated the attack by tracking Akter’s phone location to a women’s refuge and luring her out with fake GP appointment messages.
- West Yorkshire Police has self-referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is reviewing how earlier domestic abuse reports were handled.
