Husband confesses to 2016 Bitfinex hack during guilty plea in $4.5 billion bitcoin money laundering case

  • Ilya Lichtenstein admitted to orchestrating the 2016 hack of cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex resulting in theft of 119,000 bitcoin worth $71 million at the time.
  • Lichtenstein used advanced hacking tools to steal the bitcoin and transfer it to accounts he controlled.
  • Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan, known as "Bitcoin Bonnie and Clyde," laundered the stolen bitcoin through numerous transactions to obscure its criminal origin.
  • When arrested in 2022, Lichtenstein still had control of cryptocurrency worth $3.6 billion stemming from the hack.
  • Both Lichtenstein and Morgan have pleaded guilty to charges related to money laundering conspiracy and face maximum sentences of 20 years and 5 years in prison respectively.
