Overview
- Swati Suraj Pathak, 20, died by jumping from the second floor of her Wagholi home on June 7 following alleged dowry harassment since her March 2024 marriage.
- Pune police took her husband, 26-year-old Suraj Rajendraprasad Pathak, into custody on June 8 in connection with her death.
- Her father-in-law, mother-in-law and other relatives were booked under sections 80, 115(2), 3(5) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for dowry death, causing hurt and intentional insult.
- Investigators reported no suicide note was found and say further probe is under way to determine the full extent of alleged physical and mental abuse.
- The case follows May’s suicide of Vaishnavi Hagawane, whose politically connected in-laws faced similar charges, leading to renewed calls for stricter dowry and domestic violence laws.
