Hurricane Simon Lingers Off Jalisco, Forcing Evacuations and Closures

Its slow, erratic path is keeping extreme winds, extraordinary rains and 8–10 meter waves hitting the Pacific coast and prolonging danger to coastal communities.

Overview

  • Over the weekend Simon strengthened to a major hurricane and a shift in its track kept the system stalled near Cabo Corrientes, prolonging its impact on Jalisco and Colima.
  • Federal and state authorities have ordered preventive evacuations, opened shelters, suspended classes in Jalisco and Nayarit and closed or restricted ports and the airports at Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo.
  • The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional and the NHC warn of very strong winds with gusts up to about 240–295 km/h in parts of the coast, extraordinary rainfall totals that can exceed 250 mm in places, storm surge of 1.5–2.5 meters and waves of 8–10 meters nearshore.
  • Conagua, the SMN and the National Civil Protection agency have expanded zones of hurricane and tropical-storm watches northward toward Nayarit and Sinaloa and are coordinating updates while urging people to remain in shelters even during any temporary calm.
  • The slow forward motion raises the risk of prolonged flooding, landslides and damage to roads, ports and power lines so communities should expect extended disruptions and follow official advisories for when it is safe to return.
