Hurricane Isaias Strengthens Toward Category 3 as Florida Panhandle Issues Evacuations

State officials have prepositioned generators, fuel, pumps and thousands of utility workers to support near-term evacuations and fast power restoration.

Overview

  • Isaias has sustained winds of about 110 mph and is forecast to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane with expected landfall late Friday or early Saturday.
  • Bay, Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton, Franklin and Gulf counties have active evacuation orders for Zones A and B, barrier islands and other low-lying areas.
  • Florida has staged more than 1,000 generators, large fuel stocks, more than 3 million meals and 1.1 million bottles of water while placing over 6,000 utility workers on standby.
  • The Florida Department of Transportation has nearly 260 heavy pieces of equipment and 100 pumps ready, and tolls have been waived on the Garcon Point Bridge, Spence Parkway and Mid-Bay Bridge to ease movement.
  • Officials urged residents to follow local orders, shelter nearby rather than travel long distances, prepare for prolonged outages and run generators only outdoors to avoid deadly carbon monoxide.
