Hurricane Gil Strengthens in Eastern Pacific, Poses No Land Threat

Forecasters expect the storm to hold hurricane strength into the weekend as the NHC tracks three other Pacific disturbances.

Overview

  • Gil intensified into a Category 1 hurricane with 75 mph winds and is located approximately 1,080 miles west-northwest of the Baja California peninsula, moving west-northwest at 20 mph.
  • No coastal watches or warnings are in effect as the hurricane remains over open waters with no imminent threat to land.
  • Forecasts indicate Gil will maintain hurricane strength into the weekend before beginning to weaken and transitioning to a post-tropical system by August 3.
  • The National Hurricane Center is monitoring three additional eastern Pacific disturbances with seven-day development chances of 10%, 80% and 20%.
  • Tropical Storm Iona has further diminished to 40 mph winds and is expected to continue weakening as it drifts into cooler waters.
