Hurricane Gabrielle Strengthens, Set to Recurve East of Bermuda as NHC Tracks Two Waves

Swells pose the primary near-term risk as the storm turns away from land.

Overview

  • As of the NHC’s 5 a.m. Monday advisory, Gabrielle sustained 90 mph winds about 210 miles southeast of Bermuda while moving north-northwest at 10 mph.
  • A turn to the north then northeast is forecast, with the center passing east of Bermuda tonight and tracking away from the United States over open water.
  • Further strengthening is expected, with projections showing potential major-hurricane intensity by Tuesday before gradual weakening over cooler northern Atlantic waters later this week.
  • Swells from Gabrielle will produce dangerous surf and rip currents affecting Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina northward, and Atlantic Canada through early this week.
  • The NHC is monitoring two disturbances: a central Atlantic wave with a 60% seven-day formation chance after dry air subsides, and a wave east of the Lesser Antilles with a 30% seven-day chance that may bring gusty showers to the Leeward Islands Monday night into Tuesday.
