Hurricane Erin Weakens to Category 3 as It Broadens Offshore Footprint

Officials warn that Erin’s expanded wind field is fueling life-threatening surf along Caribbean beaches, extending up the U.S. Atlantic coast.

Overview

  • Downgraded to a Category 3 storm with 125 mph winds, Erin was centered about 170 miles north-northwest of San Juan on Aug. 17.
  • The storm is moving west-northwest at around 14 mph and is forecast to slow then curve north before passing east of the Turks and Caicos and the southeastern Bahamas.
  • Erin’s wind field has grown significantly, with hurricane-force gusts reaching 25 miles from its center and tropical-storm-force winds extending up to 205 miles.
  • Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the Turks and Caicos and watches cover the southeastern Bahamas as the system tracks offshore.
  • Outer bands are unleashing up to eight inches of rain across Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, prompting flash flood and landslide alerts.
