Overview

  • Erick strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 120 mph about 55 miles south-southwest of Puerto Angel as it accelerated northwestward.
  • Hurricane warnings are in effect from Acapulco to Puerto Angel, with watches extending along adjacent coastline, as authorities open roughly 2,000 temporary shelters and deploy troops and power workers.
  • The National Hurricane Center projects 8 to 16 inches of rainfall—and up to 20 inches in isolated areas—across Oaxaca and Guerrero, posing a high risk of flash floods and deadly mudslides.
  • A dangerous storm surge accompanied by large, destructive waves is expected to trigger coastal flooding, while swells will create life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
  • The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has advised against travel to affected Pacific coast regions and urged compliance with evacuation orders.
