Overview
- Hubert Hurkacz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 in the Shanghai Masters second round on Friday, handing Djokovic his first loss to Hurkacz in nine meetings just three days after Djokovic won the China Open.
- Hurkacz dominated with serve, recording 13 aces, 28 winners and winning a high share of first-serve points as one break in each set proved enough to close the match in 87 minutes.
- Djokovic said he felt “slightly more tired” after the Beijing turnaround and described Shanghai as a much quicker surface, a combination he blamed for his below-par feel on court.
- Chinese wildcard Yi Zhou, ranked No. 277, also reached the third round after saving three set points to beat Lorenzo Musetti and is set to meet Hurkacz next.
- The result deepens late-season volatility by removing a recent title winner from the Shanghai draw, boosts Hurkacz’s Shanghai streak and shifts Djokovic’s focus to the European indoor swing and the Paris Masters with Race to Turin implications.
