Hunter Biden Files Defamation Lawsuit Against Former Overstock CEO Over Unsubstantiated Iran Bribery Claims

Lawsuit alleges that false statements made by Byrne suggesting Biden sought a bribe from Iran were malicious, baseless, and suggested a link to recent violence in the Middle East; it comes amid House GOP's impeachment inquiry, adding to a series of suits from Biden against various detractors.

  • Hunter Biden has filed a defamation lawsuit against former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne. The suit alleges Byrne made false claims that Biden had sought an $800 million bribe from Iran in exchange for his father, President Biden, unfreezing $8 billion in Iranian funds.
  • The lawsuit also states Byrne attempted to connect these false claims to recent violence in the Middle East by insinuating on social media that Hunter Biden's supposed actions contributed to the terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel.
  • Hunter Biden and his uncle, James Biden, were also subpoenaed by the House Oversight and Accountability Committee on the same day the lawsuit was filed. This is part of an ongoing impeachment inquiry by the House GOP into President Biden, with a focus on Hunter Biden's foreign business dealings.
  • In response to the lawsuit, Byrne posted on social media that he would refuse to be silenced by Biden and his team. Byrne, a known ally of former President Trump, has also been sued by Dominion voting systems for spreading false information about the 2020 election.
  • This defamation lawsuit against Byrne is the latest in a series of legal actions initiated by Hunter Biden, including suits against Rudy Giuliani and former Trump aide Garrett Ziegler. Both of these cases revolve around issues related to a laptop hard drive alleged to belong to Hunter Biden.
