Hunter, 60, Mauled by Bear in Gunma on Hunting Season’s Opening Day

Police have stepped up patrols after the roughly 100‑kilogram animal fled into the forest.

  • The attack was reported around 9:27–9:30 a.m. in the Sanbakawa mountain forest of Fujioka, Gunma Prefecture.
  • Victim Kishi Mitsuaki, 60, suffered serious facial, head and left‑arm injuries and was transported unconscious to a hospital in Maebashi.
  • Police said his life is not believed to be in immediate danger.
  • Kishi was hunting with five companions when members fired at a bear; he approached the animal, which then attacked before escaping deeper into the woods.
