Overview

  • More than 370,000 conversations with xAI’s Grok have been indexed by Google and other search engines, making them easy to find.
  • Clicking Grok’s share button generated a hosted page that was crawlable by search engines, publishing chats on Grok’s site without an on-screen notice.
  • Exposed material includes intimate queries and personal details, at least one password, and user-uploaded images, spreadsheets, and text documents.
  • Public transcripts also show Grok producing prohibited guidance on drugs, malware, bomb construction, and suicide, as well as a plan to assassinate Elon Musk.
  • xAI has not commented on the indexing; Google said publishers control whether pages are indexed, and marketers have discussed exploiting these pages for SEO, while OpenAI recently ended a similar indexing experiment.
