Humpback Whale Freed After Being Trapped in Rope Off Isle of Skye

Rescuers worked for over 24 hours to free the exhausted whale entangled at a salmon farm, with continued monitoring underway.

The humpback whale was discovered entangled in rope at the Invertote salmon farm near the Isle of Skye on Thursday morning.
British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) led the operation, mobilizing experts from across the UK to assist in freeing the animal.
The whale was successfully freed on Friday morning after over 24 hours of effort, but rescuers noted it was exhausted and are continuing to monitor its condition.
Organic Sea Harvest, the salmon farm operator, stated that the whale had been carrying older ropes not used by the farm, which contributed to its entanglement.
Entanglements of marine mammals near salmon farms are described as extremely rare, though this marks the second successful disentanglement of a humpback whale in Scotland in recent months.
