Humberto Forms in Atlantic as Second System Organizes Near Bahamas

Forecast confidence remains low due to competing steering currents, with possible storm interaction influencing any intensification.

Overview

  • Humberto, the eighth named storm of the Atlantic season, was located roughly 885 km northeast of the Leeward Islands on Wednesday with sustained winds near 65–75 km/h and was moving west-northwest.
  • The National Hurricane Center says Invest 94L over the northeastern Caribbean has a high chance of developing into a depression or tropical storm as it nears the Bahamas later this week.
  • Meteorologists caution that guidance is uncertain because the jet stream over the eastern United States and a high near Bermuda could steer both systems, and close proximity could lead them to interact.
  • Invest 94L could bring heavy rain to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands through Thursday, with localized totals up to about 150 mm and risks of flash flooding and landslides.
  • Mexico’s water and meteorological agencies are monitoring Humberto and report no current danger to Mexican territory, while SMN guidance suggests Humberto could reach Category 1 by Sept. 27 and Category 2 around Sept. 29.
