Human remains retrieved from sunken Kachemak Bay boat of missing Texas family

Three sets of remains are now being examined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office following recent dives that form part of a continuing search for additional victims.

Overview

  • On August 3, 2024, a 28-foot aluminum boat carrying the Maynard family and four others capsized west of Homer and a nearby vessel rescued four passengers.
  • The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its initial search in August 2024 after finding no trace of the Maynards.
  • In April 2025, Support Vessels of Alaska, Vision Subsea and Benthic Geoscience Inc. volunteered sonar and remotely operated vehicle support to renew the recovery effort.
  • Early May teams located the missing vessel in 180 feet of water and confirmed human remains onboard using an ROV.
  • Divers recovered three sets of remains on May 27 and 28 and transferred them to the State Medical Examiner’s Office as dive teams continue searching for additional remains.
